DONUTS & BIKES: The Mountain Bike Coaching Podcast

Cornering Part 2: Using Creativity to Build Your Skills

Paul Howard & Kristian Jackson Season 2 Episode 12

Cornering is a perennial hot-topic for coaches, riders, You-Tubers, and even Podcasters. Why is it such a popular subject? Well, simply put, it’s one of the raddest things you can do on a bike. Being good at it involves a refined application of all the mountain biking skills – which is a daunting task for riders and coaches alike.

In this episode, we revisit the topic of cornering. This time we take an angle to explore what might be holding us back from getting better at changing directions on our bikes and what we can do to enjoy the process.

If you haven’t listened to the Cornering Part 1 (Season 2, Episode 5), check it out for specific tactics. In this episode, we take on:

·      Why don’t we practice what we’re not good at?

·      How motivation helps us learn

·      The Comfort Zone model and what it means for practice

·      A million ways to corner?

·      Creativity and Motivation

·      Stability as an Outcome versus a Position

·      Stability, Strength, and Fatigue

·      Steering, angulation, and letting the bike tip

·      Scanning – why we stop doing something we know to do

·      An important lesson from the Donut of the Day!

Enjoy the show!
